Provide Corrective Feedback to Help Students Learning to Draw

Please carefully read the instructions below.

In this study, you will see demonstrations of an Expert and a Student drawing the same shape or glyph. Based on these demonstrations, we are interested in understand what kind of corrective feedback you would tell the student so that they could learn how to improve their control to more closely match the expert's.

NOTE: You must be on a laptop or computer to participate. Additionally, it is important that you do NOT refresh or close the page during the experiment. We recommend using Chrome if avaiable for best performance.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. You will be asked to provide 10 corrections, each corresponding to one of 10 paired demonstrations of Expert/Student drawings of a specific, but unknown, shape or glyph.
2. You will watch the Expert and Student demonstrations at the same time, and can re-play their demonstrations by pressing the orange replay button at the top of the screen.
3. Once you have come up with a correction, type it into the text box and press the orange Submit button. You wil be asked to verify your choice.
4. Once finished, please record the special code at the end of the study and fill out the post-study survey.

You should try to provide a correction that is (i) informative (useful for the student to improve their drawing), (ii) brief (aim for no more than 5 words), and (iii) not referencing particular aspects of the expert demonstration (assume only you can see what the expert demonstration looks like).
NOTE: In some cases, you might aesthetically prefer the student's demonstration. Please still assume the expert demonstration is what you are trying to guide the student towards. An example interface, with a given correction, is shown below.

Example corrections provided by other participants (for examples other than that in the figure) are provided below, for reference:

  • "end the bottom loop in a horizontal line"
  • "make a narrower angle"
  • "make bend beak-like"
  • "make bend sharper"

You must abide by the following guidelines to receive full compensation:

  1. Provided corrections should not be longer than 10 words, and on average 5 words or less.
  2. Provided corrections should not refer to the expert demonstration (assume the student cannot see what the expert did)
  3. Provided corrections should not be spam, random phrases, or unrelated to the task.
  4. You must complete the post-study survey found here.

Complete the following quiz to get started.

  1. How many corrections will you be asked to provide?

  2. True or False: I can reference parts of the Expert demonstration in the correction I provide.
